Indian women clothing has been a fascination for not only Indians but worldwide. However, nowadays, it seems Indian woman is slowly distancing herself from the traditional Indian sarees and other Indian dresses. With due respect to all western and other clothes adopted by the women in India, it seems that she has certain misconceptions about the dresses of her own country. This article brings out the reality behind these fashion myths about Indian clothing.

Myth#1 Saree is so unprofessional!

Reality It is true that it takes a little longer to drape a saree and it also requires more care and maintenance. However, sari can never be said unprofessional. If draped properly, saree brings an unparalleled grace to one's personality. How else can you justify the charm of great personalities like Indira Gandhi, Gayatri Devi and more contemporary Sonia Gandhi? True, they are politicians and need to be seen as true Indian and so they can't shed the traditional Indian clothing! Then how will you justify the business personalities like Chanda Kochhar, the Joint MD of ICICI Bank and Neelam Dhawan, the MD, Microsoft India who are rarely seen in other dresses than saree. And no one can debate over how professional and successful top business executives are they!

Myth#2 Salwar Kameez is not for modern women!

Reality There you see a girl clad in salwar kameez and here you give her the tag 'behen ji'. However, every girl secretly admires the fabulous churidars and patialas worn by their fellow beings. Fashion designers are doing more and more experiments with this fabulous attire of India. Models on ramps flaunt their designer salwar kameez. How could it happen then? If its not for today's woman, why the fashion industry wasting so much of its manpower and money on designing these salwar kameez? And I thought business runs on demand and supply principle and also that today's woman is 100 percent a modern woman.

Myth#3 Wearing skirts is non Indian!

Reality Here people don't accept the salwar kameez and there they say that skirts are against traditional values of India! But look at them carefully, don't you find any resemblance between Indian skirts and lehenga? The long skirts are more like lehengas but with a little lesser diameter. Yes, one more difference- skirt is worn with shirts while lengha is worn with choli and dupatta. Did I hear someone saying stoles with skirts?

Myth#4 If you are slim, you'll look good in any clothing!

Reality This myth prevails all over the world and not only in India. Although being slim provides an advantage of looking good in most of the dresses but if you wear a saree without proper pleets and pallu setting, I swear, you'll not like yourself in the mirror! Wear a blouse which is either too loose or too tight, and you finish off the whole charm of an elegant saree. And just try a badly stitched salwar kameez to see how it coverts you in a hanger with clothes on it instead of a girl with lovely curves! The mantra to look good is ofcourse a good figure and properly stitched and worn dresses, whether Indian or western.

The biggest (no pun intended) challenge for many petite women is finding business suits and work wear. casual clothing can be a little easier due to the fact that they have the option of going to the j.r. ms. section or in some cases even the children's section. Professional wear for the petite woman on the other hand can be a little tougher as there aren't very many designers or brands that create high quality suits in small sizes. "Every thing is just cut way too big" is the most common complaint heard, and any amount of baggy or sloppiness in the fit can be really pronounced on a petite frame.

The petite woman and her tailor

The most important thing for a petite woman to find is a great tailor. It must be accepted that alterations need to be made in order for the clothing to fit just right, so finding a tailor you can communicate well with can make a big difference. think about it most women will go out of their way to find a hair stylist they trust, some one they can build a long term relationship with. The same should be done for the petite woman and her tailor.

To start off it is recommended that you start by looking towards brands that specialize in petites. Banana Republic, Emporio Armani, and Ted Baker for instance all carry a petite section and have some pretty fashion forward yet professional designs. If you are under 5'0" it can be tougher as you will be limited to strictly petite sizes as no amount of alterations can over come the cut being just too long. If you are 5'1" and up you have a little more options as most of the "regular" sizes can still be re-cut to a petite. Before you go shopping make sure you talk to your tailor as to the best type of alterations they can make with out compromising the integrity of the design. If all else fails, finding a Tailor the specializes in petite women's custom suits, is a great way to put together a solid business wardrobe with less hassle.

The best suits for petite women

A suit, whether it be a pant suit or skirt suit, is always a better look for a petite woman then separates. It gives more authority, and since most petite women come across younger than they are a little more air of authority in the work place cant hurt. Its best too look for lighter colors to create a bigger presence, black and other darker colors can be slimming but a little more bulk is something a small framed woman should welcome. Look for shirred or cap sleeves on blouses and jackets to give the appearance of broader shoulders. This is best only for a small framed petite, avid this if you have a curvier frame or larger arms. Look for jackets that are cropped right at our hip. this gives the illusion of longer legs and height. In the skirt department , straight skirts and pencil skirts will give create more curves. have them altered to the knee to add a little more "height". Do not go with heels that are too high as it can be some what of an after hours look and better outside of the work place. Opt instead for a mid height heel, which works well with the proportions of a petite women's suit.

They've been called everything from "the devil's work" to "the best invention in clothing for active women in decades." How could one style of clothing - the skort -- cause such controversy?

As most of you know, or would derive from the name, skorts are womens skirts with a pair of shorts underneath. Fans of skorts like that they're always comfortable and presentable, and that they never go out of style. Love them or hate them, skorts have been a staple of womens golf apparel since the 60's and remain popular today - with good reason.

I See London, I See France...

Let's face it, ladies. You don't want your colleagues on the golf course singing this childhood rhyme in their heads every time you take a swing. Modesty is one of the main reasons for sporting a skort, and as long as you get the proper size, you'll always be covered.

Be Cool

Everyone knows there's no hotter place to be in the summer than out on the golf course. Why not wear something that's designed to keep you cool and comfortable? The popular golf apparel company Antigua makes the Muse Skort, which features material with Desert Dry TM Moisture Management. With a left thigh zipper pocket, back snap pockets and 6 colors to choose from, you'll not only feel cool in the Antigua Muse Skort, but you'll look it too.

Dress for Success

When skorts were first introduced as the latest fashion in womens golf apparel they were immediately embraced by the Ladies Professional Golf Tour, and several lady pro golfers, including stylish players like Natalie Gulbis and Michelle Wie, still swear by them today. These accomplished players know that without having to worry about wardrobe malfunctions or unsightly sweat stains, you'll be able to concentrate on what you came for - winning the game!

The skirt, much like the dress has come and gone out of style in the world of fashion. However, before the 1960's, skirts were either worn long and conservative or short and showy, although, recent years have seen a few different additions to them both. For instance, for many women, skirts offer a freedom from continually wearing pants. While like dresses, a skirt that one chooses to wear often reveals the fashion sense and style of the person who wears them.

However, one style of skirt has never truly gone out of style is that of the mini skirt and it seems that those who wear mini skirts are younger than they were before. When the mini skirt first revealed itself to the world its wearer was generally a girl in upper grades of high school or a young adult. Today, those who wear mini skirts are often girls who are in their middle school or early high school years.

Whereas the wearer of a mid-length skirt will find them, more conservative and they are a favorite in the working world. For instance, a business meeting may call for a woman to wear a business suit, one that may include the wearing of a skirt. Normally these skirts are mid-length and of a straight cut. Generally, these mid-length skirts worn by women are a bit longer than a mini skirt.

Although, long skirts are not as popular today as they once were, they are adorned for some special occasions. For instance, they may be part of a cocktail dress ensemble or they may be worn with a slit up the side to create a fashionable allure. On the other hand, there are long skirts that are worn for dance purposes such as salsa or other dancing entertainments. Typically, these types of skirts will also have a slit in the skirt to make allowance for showing of a leg during a dance routine.

As mentioned earlier, skirts are often found as a matching ensemble and they are generally worn in two separate pieces to allow a woman additional comfort while wearing them. Skirts are extremely versatile. They also allow you to choose more than one matching top, which will create the ability to enhance the wearer with a more functional wardrobe, while saving money.

Many years ago, long skirts were worn that swept the ground with their hems while featuring the ability to flair out in a wide ring when spinning in circles, however they have come a very long way since that time. Today, they are more adaptable and versatile since they have been shortened. You can be assured that skirts are both comfortable and have the ability to make a lovely fashion statement.

At my age I thought I'd seen it all. But, after living in Thailand for a year I gave thanks to my mother for seeing that I was potty-trained in the good ole' U.S. of A.

A few days after arriving in Bangkok, I was shopping at Robinson's Department Store. I'd been having some bladder problems, and as many 50-something women find, their lower internal organs begin to drop, droop, sag, bag and demand attention; and we don't ignore it when we feel the familiar sign of wet knickers.

I spotted the unisex sign for "Toilet." I'd heard rumors about squat toilets; thankfully my hotel was kind enough to offer sparkly white Western sit-down toilets. Dare I try this? Logic told me to head back to my hotel, but I had to weigh the time it would take in a tuk-tuk (picture a motorcycle with a bucket seat in the back, held in place by a tin cover), and I didn't think my bladder would appreciate it. I chose the squat toilet. I mean, how bad could it be? This was Robinson's, an international upscale chain.

I peeked inside. I wanted to turn and flee. I gagged. Think Kansas City Stock Yard meets Los Angeles County Landfill. I held my breath until I felt faint. I thought about trying to breathe through my mouth but decided it might be better to smell than to taste. I had to do this. There was no backing out now. I gave my kegel muscles a huge clench and duck-waddled inside.

There it lay, the ubiquitous Eastern squat toilet, waiting for the next feeble foreigner. It was a hole cut in the tile floor, with porcelain inside the hole and a thin porcelain ledge around the top to stand on. The sides were dappled with droplets of doo-doo in various shades of black, brown and ecru.

For my American sisters who have never traveled to a foreign country that offers these contortion contraptions, let my story serve as a high-level travel alert.

I studied this enigma and tried to decide on the best point of entry. I stepped up closer to the beast. Wait! How is a woman supposed to squat on this thing? If you're wearing long pants they need to be pulled down, along with your undies. To where do you pull them? If you pull them down just a little, you'll pee on them. So, you must get into a kind of stooping position, then pull them down just past your butt cheeks and squat. While squatting, you have to pull them down a little more and tuck them under your knees. You also need to hike them up far enough so the bottoms don't touch the filthy floor. Then you squat-walk towards the hole.

But what if you have on a full skirt or muumuu? You have to pull the front of the skirt up and wad it under your chin, then grab the back of the skirt and wrap it around your waist and try to make a cute little square knot to hold everything in place. And while you're trying to maneuver yourself into position you have no idea where your feet are with all the clothes piled up around your torso.

You scan the room for a toilet paper. Nada! You panic! But wait, over in the corner you spot a spigot with a hose and pail ready and waiting for the nice little butt lavage. This is Asia, girlfriend. Forget about using paper to pat your tu-tu dry. Water is the cleanser of choice.

It's now time to conquer your fears — and damp drawers. You're going to need an Olympic score of ten on your mount, and hope your feet hit the indents and not the hole. The porcelain is wet. The floor is wet. There is no paper. You start to pray. You hike up your skirt, wrap it around yourself, drop your drawers and tuck them behind your knees, and make the jump.

You made it! Now you're on and in the squatting position. You wonder if you can keep your balance long enough to empty your bladder. It freezes. It's not going to cooperate. It trickles out one drop at a time, punishing you. Your back hurts, your thighs are screaming and your hamstrings are losing ground. Your purse handles are between your teeth as you try to dig out a piece of tissue with one hand while the other is flailing overhead for balance. One wrong move and you could do a pratfall onto the filthy, wet floor, or, the unthinkable — the hole.

Your bladder quits pouting and finally empties; it's now time to dismount. But how? You realize you have to get up, and you must do it before the store closes. There's nothing to hang on to. Both arms are now flailing about, your teeth are losing their grip on your purse handles, and your clothes are tucked into your wrinkles. You must prepare for your dismount before you fall face forward or ass backwards. You know you'll have no help from your burning thigh muscles. You give a giant heave and fling yourself up and out of the crouched position.

Yes! You made it! I'm sure everyone in the store knew I'd successfully landed my dismount when they heard me yell, "Thank you, Buddha!"

Ultimately, I suppose that the squat toilet is a great idea when it comes to the process of elimination. That is if you're in your 20s and practice yoga every day. I missed these criteria by about thirty years. Suffice it to say I wouldn't want to be caught with my knickers around my ankles with a Candid Camera crew hovering in the wings.

The Indian sarees of the women in India has a history which goes way back during the ancient times. There have been several versions of its beginnings, why women consider wearing it as part of their tradition.

According to one legend, a beautiful woman, Draupadi, is lost to a gamble because of her husband. The enemies of her husband have a desire to embarrass her, so, they pulled on the cloth that has been draped around her body. But no matter how much they keep on pulling, the cloth never seems to end. In a spiritual view of the tale, the men who have won the gambling game stand for whatever that is evil in the world, and they keep on pulling the cloth which stands for eternity. This cloth that they have been trying to unwind is now known as the Indian sarees.

Another legend also states that the Indian sarees originated from the loom of a weaver who likes to dream so much. As he weaves on the loom, he dreams of a woman, the way her tears fall down her face, the way her hair falls down on her shoulders. He imagines her moods as various kinds of colors, and her skin soft to the touch. With these ideas in mind, he keeps on weaving for a long time until the cloth reached a hundred yards. And when he looked at what he has done, he smiled in satisfaction. This tale is among the reasons why women wear Indian sarees, this is to exude the femininity in them.

The earliest version of the Indian sarees has been that of a short cloth. It has been used as a skirt or a veil. During those early times, women have not been wearing a blouse under their Indian sarees, their chest is bare. In other rare areas of India, the women there still do not wear a blouse or choli underneath their Indian sarees.

The reason why Indian sarees do not have stitches in the past is because they are considered as pure. During olden times in India, the needles that are being used are made from bones, and the people considered their traditional clothes as pure so they dared not taint the purity by running bone needles on the cloth.

For the Indian weavers of the Indian sarees, the precise measurement of the saree is 47 inches by 216 inches. Even though the Indian sarees are not tailored, the design of the cloth speaks of sophistication. The print on the Indian sarees follows a specific method of weaving which manifests a rhythm of design.

The design pattern of the Indian sarees depends on the region and culture where the saree is made. The Muslims are known to design their Indian sarees with so much gold. These kinds of sarees are mostly used for ritual traditions. There are also Indian sarees which are made from silk with gold embroiders.

In the past, the women of India have no options for the style of their Indian sarees. But recently, there have been an emerging various styles of sarees which are available not only for Indian women, but also for other women from all over the world who want to try out a different kind of clothing style.

"Mad Men" is once again the runaway season hit. With its witty banter, beautiful cinematography and talented scriptwriting, how could it miss? The show was an obvious winner, but who knew what mayhem the show's fashions would bring?! Betty, Joan, Don and Roger are the show's standout fashionistas. You may not like how they live their lives, but man, do their outfits rock!

Betty and Joan

Betty and Joan are an obvious fashion dichotomy. Betty, with her Grace Kelly looks and simple housewife demeanor continually steals the show. Always perfectly coifed with never a hair out of place, Betty epitomizes the upscale, 1960's housewife. Remember her riding look? Amazing figure, no respectful housewife would dare eat a morsel more; spotless clothes topped with matching scarf and dazzling pear earrings. She's always a stunner, but without over doing it.

Joan is not glitzy or flamboyant, but rather aware of how she can best capture, and flaunt, her best assets. Forward in her talk and fashions, Joan purposefully emphasizes her beauty. Joan is often seen in hues of green, which of course compliments her gorgeous, red hair. All of her outfits are perfectly tailored and made to hug each curve. She wears soft, feminine and inviting fabrics. She makes no apologies for her femininity and stays true to herself.

Don and Roger

Don Draper, the TV show's star, is a breathtaking man from almost all perspectives. Unmistakably handsome, he is always the head-turner in his sharp, yet simple suits and skinny ties. Not only is his appearance crisp, but so is his business style. He has never a moment too chit-chat or talk shop, yet brilliant in his own right as an ad man.

Roger Sterling, the older, quintessential '60's white collar business owner, is comfortable in his more formal, three piece suits. The three piece suit has the flair of showmanship or performance. What other way to present yourself as a business man who creates images?

Peggy, Rachel, Midge, and Joy

As each character develops, their garbs fit who they are more and more. Peggy Olsen, the show's awkward, single woman trying to make a name for herself in the ad world, has changed her fashion style as the show progresses. Starting out at Sterling and Cooper as Don Draper's secretary, Peggy lived in boxy shaped dresses and thick cotton skirts. She clearly was uncomfortable with herself or unsure of who she was. She has now settled for girlish, non-offensive smocks. She's often seen with peter pan collars and bow details. Sporting a stylish, short bob, Peggy has started to come into her own.

Don invariable introduces new women to the show who come and go. The department store owner, Rachel Menkes, had an obvious understanding of how to pair stylish, side-swept hair with sensual low cut tops. The hippie movement in the 60's is not evident on the show since the setting is upscale New York. However, Midge, another one of Don's women, favors the bohemian, billowy skirts and loose, un-styled hair. The West Coast, breezy '60s sensibility had a brief cameo when Don meets up with Joy. Out in California, Joy and her friends wear light-colored sheath dresses and styled, yet not complicated hairstyles.

Conclusion

There is no lack of style or intrigue in the "Mad Men" lineup. Tailored suits and stylish women are in no short supply. However, as with all great shows, it is the inner mystique and intrigue of the characters and story line that ultimately drives the show to the ratings, and awards, it deserves. And if you happen to spot a sweater you "must have", all the better.
